The importance of story time

When children are used to playing on screens all day, it can be difficult to get them excited to sit down to read - even more so if you have more than one child, as usually one will cajole the other and before you know it they’re both watching “Frozen” on your tablet. However, we’re here to point out just how beneficial it is for your kids and for you to take some time out of your day, and sit down to read a story together; not just to improve their literary skills, but to help in the development of their personality too.

Boost your child's logic and imagination

The best artists in the world can’t hold a candle to a child’s imagination; it’s wild, inventive, funny and absurd, yet we love them all the more for it. As a parent, however, we know all too well that all those princess tea parties and superhero blowouts can be massively draining, so why not opt for a calmer activity like reading – it is the perfect way to help them develop their imaginative skills and, at the same time, it requires a little less energy from you.

A good imagination will help children socialise once they reach the age to start school too, while fictional stories are a great way for developing your child's problem-solving skills. Researchers have actually found that brain activity when we read fiction is very similar to experiencing a situation in real life, which shows that reading about a problem helps children work out how to solve it in reality - a win-win if you ask us. Stories also introduce them to new, fascinating ideas about the world, and allow them to expand their intuitive side. Listening to you read aloud will help them to contemplate the story a bit more deeply and ask questions about different scenarios. Reading stories to children can offer a range of exotic and unheard-of places, extraordinary people and eye-opening situations that will expand and enrich their world.

Literacy skills

Reading books will help build the foundations of your child's literary knowledge, quite useful for when they start school. Right from the start they will notice and mimic how you hold a book, the process of reading and the pace you keep when you turn the pages – monkey see monkey do, as the saying goes. As you are reading to them they will hear new words and subconsciously remember the correct pronunciation for them. As a bonus, through hearing stories read aloud to them at a young age, your kids are likely to learn to love books and want to pick up reading as a hobby or past-time when they grow up.

How storytime will help you out

If you’re a parent you will know just how hard it can be to entertain a child –the tantrums that can come from boredom are absolutely brutal. Reading with your children from a young age is an amazing tool to help free some of your time, as it subconsciously teaches them to become more independent – aka, they know how to best entertain themselves, so no more disruptions while you’re making lunch! Books are also the perfect companion for travelling with. Whether that’s during picnics, or sleeping over at Gran’s, having something to do when you’re on public transport or on a plane, they’re the easiest thing to carry in your bag and something that can keep your child happily occupied for hours (you’ll see just how much when you introduce them to the Harry Potter series).

The benefits of bedtime stories

Bedtime... it can be a parent’s worst nightmare - no pun intended. Reading is a relaxing and calming activity which, unlike television, helps to unwind your child's mind and slows them down, to get ready for sleep. Bedtime stories allow your little ones to focus on a fantasy world before drifting off, promoting peaceful dreaming too. Calming picture books are always a good option for younger children to look at before bed as it allows them to focus on the imagery.

Having your kids look forward to hearing a bedtime story can also speed up the whole night-time process, as it becomes a habitual task they look forward to – a little cosy time with mummy or daddy. So, not only does story time promote a more peaceful night-time routine, but you also get some extra sweet bonding time with your little ones - what’s not to enjoy, really?
